Thank you for taking the time to read about me. Researching and choosing the right lawyer and trusted advisor is a big deal. And I know dealing with lawyers isn't everyone's favorite thing to do!
BTW, if you want to read more about the legal services I provide and how I can help you, please see my Estate Planning (aka "Life Planning and Protection") page or my Business Legal Services page. Continue reading this page if you want to know something about me, Debra Garcia, the attorney and counselor at law behind this website.
So here's the scoop...
When I was younger, I wanted to “save the world.” This led me to seek out and attend a public interest law school. (I actually cried when I read their brochure and how they trained people to save the world.) After law school, I practiced law for a short while. I discovered that I absolutely couldn't stand the adversarial nature of the law as I experienced it then. I looked for a way out as fast as I could!
A short while later, I pursued my passion for education by getting a master’s degree in Adult Education. I then started my own small business teaching English as a Second Language to adults (mostly “visiting scholars” at U.C. Berkeley, as well as small business owners and other professionals who wanted to improve their Business English skills). I did this for over a decade and gained a ton of practical experience as a solopreneur/small business owner; plus, met wonderful people with incredible life stories.
I’ve discovered over the years that collaboration and supporting others in reaching their goals is one of my top values; and it makes me happy.
While serving small business owners, I discovered that a lot of folks didn't have their "personal business" in order and were in danger of having the State, or other people they did not want, making (literally) life and death decisions for them. That's when I became interested in Life Planning and Protection (aka Estate Planning), especially for my LGBTQ brothers and sisters and allies. I want to ensure that everyone's personal wishes are carried out in the event of their incapacity or death.
I use my legal expertise, as well as my own personal life and small business experience to support individuals, couples, families, solopreneurs, and small business owners.
I prefer to develop relationships with my clients rather than just doing a one-off service for you. I’d like to know what your goals are and to support you in looking at the bigger picture of your life and/or your business and how to protect yourself, your family, and your business.
What are your wishes for your life (and after)? What do you want to achieve? What do you want to contribute? That’s what’s most important to me.
So if you’re someone who wants to take control of your life, or a small business owner or solopreneur who wants to protect and grow your business, I’d love to talk to you!
